It should be obvious but I’ll go ahead and state this, we cannot fully know.  There are things that we do know and there are some things that are implied.  While other topics aren’t mentioned or hinted about.  Let’s start with what we know.

You will not be married.

In Matthew 22 some Jewish people who didn’t believe in the resurrection gave Jesus a scenario about a woman who had many husbands.  Then they asked whose wife was she in heaven.  “Jesus replied, “You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven.”

To some people this is a sad thing, that they won’t be married in heaven.  But you need to consider it from this perspective, we will know everyone better than you currently know your spouse!  You won’t feel alone or disconnected to your wife or husband, you will feel fully known, fully accepted and fully loved by all.  God isn’t separating you from one person, He is connecting you to many.

There isn’t a sun but there isn’t night either.

This is found in Revelation 21, “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.  The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it.  On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there.”

It is strange to think about how God’s glory and Jesus (the Lamb) are the light source.  This is how I envision it.  In 2016 my wife and I went to Puerto Rico and swam in a bioluminescence bay.  Basically there are micro organisms who produce this blue light when the water around them is moved.  It was an incredible experience worthy of your bucket list.  Every splash and movement created sparks and glows of blue light.  You felt like you were swimming in space, the water was the dark expanse of space and the blue lights were the stars.  Words fail when you try to describe it.  That same concept is how i envision heaven.  As we walk around heaven light will radiate and glow around us, because His presence will fill all of heaven.  We will constantly be surrounded and engulfed in the glory of God and the light that gives.  Sounds awesome!

There are some implications with “no night there”.  I think it probably means that we won’t sleep, since we don’t need to rest.  A spiritual body has no need of rest like a physical body.

You will probably have a job in heaven.

This is based on Genesis 2 before the fall of man.

“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.  So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.”

You can see from the above passage that man had jobs before sin entered the world, he had to work in the garden and name animals.  After sin came, so did thorns and weeds and hard work.  The most difficult part of having a garden is the daily fight with weeds.  A garden without briars and unwanted plants would be planting and harvesting.  Easy.  Based on Genesis it’s likely that we will have jobs or tasks in heaven when God restores the order of things.

There won’t be sorrow and pain in heaven

This comes from Isaiah 65,

“See, I will create new heavens and a new earth.  The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind.  But be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create, for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight and its people a joy.  I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people; the sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more.  “Never again will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days,…”

And from Revelation 7, “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”

And Revelation 21:4, “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

As you get older and see pain, heartache and experience the death of someone dear to you, this concept becomes more appealing.  I know of families who have lost new babies or very young children and it’s horrific.  The joy of birth is crushed with the death of this dear child.  All of that is gone in heaven.  The pain and heartache found in a breakup or divorce will be gone.  The physical suffering that some people endure will be eliminated.  The emotional distress of not fitting in or bullying or abuse will end.  This is God’s plan to annihilate ALL PAIN, ALL SUFFERING, ALL TEARS.   His plan is to bring joy, delight and happiness that only comes from being united with a loving Father.

Tomorrow I’ll discuss animals and pets in heaven.
